The last time we wrote about the house at 101 Maple St., we said it “was built in 1971 and its exterior looks it.” Back then, the house was dated on the outside and priced at $3.495 million (it sold two years later for $3.3 million). After an extensive remodel it’s back on the market, and this time, no one is using the d-word. That’s because the 1970s features have been scrapped in favor of a modernist look that’s wholly today. Not only is the house updated, it appears larger (up from three bedrooms to five) and is undoubtedly more expensive (with an asking price that’s nearly $9 million higher). At least you can see where they added value. The exterior of the old house was stuck in the disco era, but the new look means that, these days, few will call the place a dated ugly duckling.
Inside, there’s a dramatic stair with thick wooden treads and glass rails. This design feature runs all the way up to the roof deck (which is sited perfectly to look over the regal crowns of the neighbors and into the leafy green of the park). There’s a large pane of glass on the floor of the roof deck—it’s a retractable glass ceiling that tops part of the master suite. That is a master with a capital “M,” by the way. It takes up an entire floor, with a bedroom, a luxe marble bath, a den, and two walk-in closets. That’s just taste of the luxury you find on every level of this now-beautiful swan.
